Canterbury Cathedral
Easily accessible from central London, Canterbury Cathedral is the jewel in Kent’s crown- UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mother Church of the Anglican Communion, and seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, there is much to discover within.
St Augustine, sent by Pope Gregory the Great, arrived in Kent in 597AD as a missionary and became the first Archbishop, establishing his seat (or 'Cathedra') in Canterbury. In 1170 Archbishop Thomas Becket was murdered in the Cathedral and ever since, the Cathedral has attracted thousands of pilgrims, as told most famously in Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. One of only a few kings to be buried outside London, King Henry IV, is entombed here, and the Black Prince also has an impressive tomb within. An architectural marvel, the Cathedral houses a Romanesque Crypt, dating back to the 11th century, a 12th century early Gothic Quire and a 14th Century Perpendicular Nave. Beautiful medieval stained-glass windows illustrate miracles and stories associated with St Thomas while the intricately carved wooden Quire and stunning stonework ensure that there is a surprise around every corner. Canterbury Cathedral remains one of the most visited places in the country and, just as importantly, a working, living church and community.
Visitors have always been made welcome in the ancient tradition of Benedictine hospitality and we continue this tradition, warmly inviting you to share with us in the beauty of one of the great holy places of Christendom. Whether visiting on your own or with a group, there is always something to fascinate and inspire, and with brand new facilities from a Visitor Centre to shop, there is more than ever to explore. With guided tours and audio guides available to enhance your experience and a year-round events programme, groups can benefit from bespoke tours or behind-the-scenes visits. Our on-site first-class accommodation facilities, Cathedral Lodge, offers bed and breakfast accommodation for individuals or groups of up to 50 people, while our conference and event facilities can cater for everything from a small business event to a large wedding reception.
Canterbury Cathedral is a truly special place for everyone and will be a highlight of your itinerary whenever you visit.
